Students from 14 Missouri high schools stayed at the Linn State Technical College campus for the 2008 Computer Professions on Demand (CPoD) scholarship program in June. LSTC hosted the week-long program to provide students an opportunity to learn about career possibilities in computer technology fields. “CPoD is a joint effort between LSTC and the Information Technology Coalition in Jefferson City. Together, we work to expose area high school students to the IT professions right here in Mid-Missouri,” said Becky Dunn, LSTC Director of Admissions. “It’s a great time for the students to network and enhance their computer skills.” Through practical training sessions students experienced problem solving, critical thinking, cyber safety and application development. Students were divided into small groups to create technical presentations regarding different aspects of CPoD. In addition to the hands-on experiences, students visited businesses, college campuses and state agencies. Businesses and state agencies included the State Capitol, DNR Lewis & Clark Building, Learfield Communications, the News Tribune and the State Data Center in Jefferson City. College campuses included the Advanced Technology Center in Mexico, Columbia College in Jefferson City and Westminster College in Fulton. Students also learned about database concepts, Second Life and digital video production technology. Donations from several mid-Missouri businesses help underwrite the expenses of the week-long program. Donors include: Advanced Technology Center, CDW-G, Pranav Parekh, Central Technology Services, Ciber, Cisco Systems, Inc., Columbia College, DST, Embarq, IBM, Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce, Jefferson City Information Technology Coalition, Linn State Technical College, Menu Maker, Microsoft, Mid-Missouri Tech Prep Consortium, Pepsi, Prairie Farms, Rose International, Slackershack Software, State of Missouri, Three Rivers Electric Cooperative, Tier Technologies and Westminster College.
